DEFINITION:
Stainless Steels are considered to be steels
with corrosion resistant properties. This resistance arises from an oxide
film that forms naturally on the surface of the steel. This film will “self heal” if
damaged mechanically or chemically. Different grades of stainless steel
vary in their ability to withstand corrosion,
so it is important to know which grade a product is made from.
GRADES:
The HammerHead™ LX
is made from Grade 304 stainless steel, which is used extensively in
surgical applications and food service industries because of its extreme durability,
and because it cleans quickly and easily. It is also impact resistant
because of its unique microstructure.
Some stainless steel products are made
from Grade 430, which is less expensive than Grade 304. Grade 430 will
rust and is not nearly as durable as Grade 304. Manufacturers who use
Grade 430 may not disclose it but it is easy to tell the difference. Grade
304 stainless steel in non-magnetic. If a magnet sticks to stainless steel
- it will rust!
Note: There are a few places on the LX where a magnet
will stick because of its galvanized steel inner structure.
STRENGTH:
The strength of stainless steel is about 20% greater than mild (ordinary)
steel.
CARE:
Grade 304 stainless steel cleans easily without the need for harsh chemicals.
Grease or oil should be cleaned as soon as possible, they get harder to
clean if left on for more than a day or two. Grade 304 stainless steel
does show fingerprints because of its smooth glass-like finish. We recommend
the use of a good quality stainless steel cleaner, use a soft cloth and
wipe it with the grain. After a few applications fingerprints are much
less noticeable. Never
use abrasive materials to clean stainless steel.
